Our passion

Barley has magical properties.

Able to grow in just a few months with minimal resources, this cereal is the foundation of beer, whisky, and countless other foods.

It is this grain, so rich, yet so humble, that we have fallen in love with.

Our activities

Grain trading

Enhancing the Grain

Every day, we strive to meet the needs of industrial barley users, with a particular focus on brewing barley. This requires close collaboration with quality collectors and suppliers to meet our clients’ expectations. We bring our expertise and services by connecting surplus barley production regions (Europe, Australia, Argentina, Canada) with deficit consumption areas across the world.

Aware that barley is a niche market, traded exclusively over-the-counter, commitment and trust are core values that guide our daily work and are part of our roots.

In practice, Granit offers a comprehensive range of services: barley that meets specifications, smooth logistics, high-quality execution, market liquidity (essential for buyers and sellers), financing guarantees, and market analysis.

With a clearly defined strategy, to become the global leader in maritime flows of brewing barley, Granit ensures healthy and sustainable growth over time, always aiming to better serve our partners.

Execution

Safeguarding the Grain

At Granit, our DNA is to think in 360° to ensure smooth and responsive execution of barley flows while keeping quality and timelines under control.

With our multicultural team of five professionals in logistics, operational administration, and contract documentation, we bring together over 70 years of combined experience.

Granit’s execution team, enriched by this cultural diversity, is particularly well-positioned to provide tailored solutions that meet our clients’ barley supply specifications.

Working alongside you across five continents, from origin to destination, we have built a robust network of partners selected with the same high standard of service that our team delivers throughout every mission.

At Granit, our strength lies in our ability to reinvent ourselves every day, providing an increasingly agile and proactive service for our clients.

Chartering

Faire voyager le grain

Granit’s growth also relies on its ability to transport cereals by sea across the globe.
With many years of experience, we have developed solid expertise in shipping grains across oceans and to every continent.

Each year, we charter nearly one million tonnes of cargo on vessels ranging from Coasters to Kamsarmax ships.
We mainly purchase freight to cover our business, most of which is on a CFR basis.

However, we also operate as freight operators, which allows us to offer chartering services to our clients. This dual approach enables us to provide a wide range of solutions and options tailored to specific needs. We carry out these chartering operations by developing long-term, reliable partnerships built on trust with all players in the maritime transport industry.

Our history

In France, the three first global leaders in malt production were born. Since then, this industry has been omnipresent in the French barley trade, both for domestic consumption and for export. It was in this context that two of us, passionate about the barley trade, came together around a shared ambition: to become the global leader in barley trading for the malting industry.

Building on our experience in agriculture and malting, we, Julien DARLEY and Alexandre JONET, developed a business addressing a clearly identified need for services within a highly structured sector. Barley is not a simple agricultural commodity. Mastering its market requires a deep understanding of all its parameters.

Sourcing the right quality, estimating supply and demand balances, speaking the same language as maltsters to understand their needs, chartering ships, and fulfilling contractual obligations are all key skills we have applied since the very beginning of our journey.

Granit has thus created a business that contributes to the functioning of the sector, from the farmer to malt-derived products such as beer, spirits, and various other ingredients.Alongside this activity, we also develop the trade of feed barley in synergy with brewing barley.
